SNL @ 50: Seriously, Can You Believe It?!
Okay, so, like, Saturday Night Live is turning 50. FIFTY. That’s, like, ancient in TV years. I remember watching it with my parents (yes, I’m old enough to remember that) and thinking, “These people are so weird.” And now? I’m the weird one quoting old sketches and desperately trying to explain the “Landshark” to my kids. Full circle, right?
This weekend is SNL’s big birthday bash, and honestly, I’m buzzing. They’ve already kicked things off with a concert hosted by Jimmy Fallon (of course it was Fallon) with everyone from Miley Cyrus to Lady Gaga. I mean, talk about a lineup. I’m still trying to figure out how they got Post Malone in there, but whatever, I’m not complaining.
But the real deal is Sunday. Three hours of pure SNL goodness. NBC, be there or be square. They’re promising a reunion of epic proportions. Think about it: Chevy Chase, maybe? Bill Murray? (Please, please, please let there be Bill Murray.) And then all the newer folks, too – the McKinnons, the Davidsons… it’s going to be a comedy explosion.
Honestly, SNL is more than just a show. It’s like… a weird family reunion we all have every week. It’s where we go to laugh at ourselves, at politics, at pop culture… basically, at everything. It’s given us so many iconic characters and catchphrases that are just part of our language now. I still randomly yell “More cowbell!” at inappropriate times. (Don’t judge me.)
So, yeah, I’m setting my DVR. I’m making popcorn. I’m probably going to cry a little bit. Because SNL at 50? That’s not just a TV show anniversary. It’s a reminder of all the times we’ve laughed until our sides hurt, all the weird characters we’ve fallen in love with, and all the “Weekend Update” jokes we’ve butchered at parties. It’s… well, it’s SNL. And it’s a big deal. Don’t miss it. Seriously.
